DIY Copper Mistletoe

12.07.16

So one year in Germany, I visited a Christmas market and found the most beautiful bunch of fresh mistletoe. Ever since I have been obsessed. I love the wild shape, the green leaves and white berries, and the ridiculous but cute tradition of kissing when you’re caught underneath. It’s all very Muppet Christmas Carol-ey, and I think we can agree life should be a little more like that. Perhaps without the giant spider muppet though.

Anyways, I’ve been unable to find fresh mistletoe in my area that rivals that first large bunch, so I made my own DIY copper mistletoe. Because if there’s one thing that can improve wild greenery, it’s copper of course.

Did yesterday’s post make you think I could get through this season without making anything with copper? Have you been paying attention?

This project uses the same copper foil as my DIY copper inspiration board. It’s my favorite craft supply for sure; it’s super shiny and you can cut it with regular sharp scissors.

My favorite bit about the end result of this DIY might just be the teeny tiny pom pom “berries.” Look how cute!

I’ve made a solemn vow to never, ever ask you to draw by providing templates whenever possible. All YOU have to do is download my super fancy free printable template below.

Skill Level: Tracing and cutting. You got this.

Time: 30ish minutes

What You Need:

.003 thick or 40 gauge copper foil* (this brand doesn’t show the gauge but I used it and it is the perfect thickness)

+ scissors*

+ tiny white pom poms,* between 5-7mm

+ tweezers,* optional but helpful if tiny pom poms make you feel like you have sausage fingers

+ super glue* (the gel kind is so much less messy!)

+ metallic embroidery thread,* or other string/ribbon to hang

What You Do:

step one – Print the template below, cut it out, and trace it onto a piece of copper foil. You can print the template onto regular paper, but I find it’s easier to trace if you print it onto cardstock.

step two – Cut out the copper mistletoe!

step three – Glue on a couple pom poms. Place them at the points where the leaves meet the stem. Real mistletoe has more berries than this but I think just a few looks more elegant in this case.

step four – Attach the embroidery thread or ribbon. I didn’t want to squish the top of the mistletoe, so I glued a loop to the back, then wrapped another cord around it and tied it off so it would look nicer from the front.

And that’s it!

So who would you want to kiss under the mistletoe this year, if you are/were single? I wouldn’t mind if Jeff Goldblum happened to walk by while I was hanging mine…
