One of my favorite design bloggers once wrote, “I like all colors that are black or white.”
It stuck with me because I laughed. I am a person who likes all the colors, and who specifically dislikes the combination of black and white.
Funny how six years of a garishly painted rental can change your whole style.
I LIKE ALL COLORS THAT ARE BLACK OR WHITE. It’s like my mantra now. I even like black and white together. Throw in some warm wood tones and a metallic or two and I’m sold. There is still plenty of color in my home, but it’s just in little wisps, a pillow here, an art piece there. Even my wardrobe has shifted from what I like to call “vintage kitsch” to mostly neutrals. I’ve slowly become a person who limits the pink in her outfit to one piece at a time. Who am I even??
The point of it all is, after six years of living in a saturated yellow and blue kitchen, its days are finally numbered. I’m hoping — hoping — to get this mess painted this fall. We’ll see. Regardless, the future is looking much less colorful, in the best of ways.

Thank you to Dan of Manhattan Nest (yes, he’s my favorite, always and forever), for showing me a more stylish way, and of course to the former tenants of this apartment, whose paint choices have driven me to the point of style metamorphosis.
Do you like more color or are you leaning towards neutrals too?
Ohh goodness these kitchens are good. We painted the kitchen in our last rental what I call ‘healthy egg yolk yellow’. It was bright and sunny, but I’m way loving our white and copper kitchen now.
I used to think yellow kitchens were charming until I lived in one. I know it can be done well, but this certainly isn’t a good example, lol. And I LOVE your white and copper kitchen!
Great collection! I still love leather pulls for drawers. Pinned 🙂
Me too! Such a good look. Thanks for the love!
I never realized black and white could look this good! I guess it’s all about the pieces you use…
I think that’s spot-on, Daria! Thanks for visiting! Xoxo
Such beautiful spaces! Love these, Marlene!
Don’t you just want to move right in??
So gorgeous! I love the look of clean black and white kitchens! I would love to have one in the future!

Me too, me too! I’m trying to see if I can bribe my friends to help me paint with pizza and beer. 😉 Thanks for visiting, Andrea!
I love this color combo but when I always try to do it in my home I can’t help but gravitate towards lots of color and pattern!
I go back and forth and sometimes the result is less than pleasing, lol!
Where can i get the shelves?
Thanks for reading! The images in this post are all from different sites around the web, so unfortunately I don’t know anything about the details of the designs. I suggest clicking through to the source to try to find product info. Which image are you referring to? I could try to help you find a similar product.
Hi Marlene, I have been planning to renovate my kitchen for a year now. I just can’t make up my mind!! Fantasizing about black shakerstyle cabinets with butcherblock top and white subway tile. Never used to like black, but it’s been growing on me and can’t get this idea out of my head. Like you I seem to be having some sort of style metamorphosis. Used to be all into colour and now noticed my choices are more neutral. Will have a look at your other articles now, you are inspiring me. Thanks!
Oooo, Nadine, what you have in mind sounds absolutely stunning! You should totally go for it!! I wonder if going “more neutral” is part of getting older?? Whatever the cause, I’m enjoying the design results. Good luck with your kitchen reno, I would love to hear what you decide on! And thank you so much for your sweet words and for reading! xx 🙂
Thanks for replying Marlene and for giving me that last final push (together with my sister-in-law who also favoured black) I ordered the black cabinets and am committed now! Will show you the final result, but it’ll take a few months before the kitchen arrives and going to try and do as much as I can myself. Great blog! X
