I’m so happy to share this guest DIY with you today, by the talented Marwa of the blog Enthralling Gumption. Marwa is one of the many wonderful women I’ve met online through this wild and weird thing called blogging. She has a great eye for color and design, and creates fun and easy home decor projects, accessories, and beautiful printables. Today Marwa has been kind enough to share her talents with you guys while I continue to recover from my chaotic apartment move. Enjoy!

80’s Memphis style pattern is back on trend for quite some time now. Terrazzo being a part of the movement, on which both Marlene and I have a couple of projects for you to check out!
This time around, I wanted to give a mix of squiggle, wacky geometry and even 3D version of them (giving it a modern twist) a try. The great thing about it is that this design is forgiving and easy to make. You may even end up drawing something out your head similar to them.
Since we are on a back-to-school rush, I decided to create two DIY 80’s style patterned bookmarks for my daily planner with the help of Deco Art’s patent leather paint. Now without further ado, let’s jump into the real deal.
DIY 80s Style Patterned Bookmarks
What you need:
- Leather scrap
- Deco art leather paint
- Thin brush
- Quick-drying glue
- Leather hole puncher
- Masking tape
- Scale or ruler
- Pen
What you do:
Step 1 — With pen and scale draw a rectangle measuring 1.5X6″ inch.
Step 2 — Following the line, cut out the leather strip with a pair of sharp scissors.
Step 3 — Tape the leather strip in a diagonal line from one corner of it to the other. Taking inspiration from the 80’s Memphis design, paint patterns using 2-3 neutral leather paint colors.
Step 4 — Punch a 4.7mm hole in the non-painted side of the leather. Then string it with a leather lace measuring 3.5″ inch (taken from the same leather scrap).
Step 5 — To make the tassel, cut out a rectangle measuring 1.5X4″ inch. Keeping a width of 0.5″ inch free on one side, draw 1/32” inch wide fringe with pen and scale on the other end.
Step 6 — Following the earlier measurement, cut the strings with a pair of scissors like so.
Step 7 — Apply a line of quick drying glue on the non-fringed side of the leather. Then place the string over this fringed leather piece and roll it all the way. Wipe out excess glue with a cloth if any.
Step 8 — Fasten a binder clip to the tassel to create a clamping pressure. Remove it once the glue has dried completely.
You are now ready to use your modern quirky bookmarks for your school textbooks, planner, fiction, comics and what not! Cause who doesn’t love a good pop of color.
