DIY Modern Spring Wreath

04.22.16

So two weeks ago we had snow…and now it’s 80ºF. A traditional spring it is not. But I’m stubborn so I’m pretending everything is peachy keen by indulging in as many flowers as I possibly can until bikini season.

Danger!Awesome Notebook Campaign Starts TODAY!

04.12.16

Today is the day! You can grab your own “Just Pay Me in Craft Supplies” notebook over on danger!awesome!

Just Pay Me in Craft Supplies - Custom Notebook by Idle Hands Awake

I know you love a new blank notebook just as much as I do, which is why I teamed up with danger!awesome to design this beauty just for you, dear readers. (Ok, I admit, I wanted one too).

I wrote more about the notebook and danger!awesome last week, but in case you need a reminder, danger!awesome is a Boston-area design firm that works with regular people to turn their ideas into real life products. Profits are shared with the client or a charity of the clients’ choice—in this case, 25% of the proceeds from this notebook will go towards the Animal Rescue League of Boston!

Psst, locals: they also have classes!

Each custom item is produced on a pledge basis to keep costs affordable for the public. That means, just 15 people need to buy a copy and it gets made. The notebook can be yours for $15 including shipping. But it’s a limited run for 7 days, after which it won’t be available! So hop on over to the campaign and grab your notebook today!

How will you use yours? I’m thinking to-do lists. doodles, middle-of-the-night DIY project ideas, sketches, garden plans, passwords I can’t remember, recipes, random thoughts, quotes…

Hello Friday – Meraki

04.08.16

Hello Friday - sharing my favorite links of the week

Oh my friends, am I ever glad it is Friday! We’ve had four seasons in the last two weeks here in New England and it’s making everything feel harder. Thank goodness the web is so ripe with distraction. Here’s what I’m loving this week; what about you?

+ Fran proves yet again that she still holds the title for Best Use of Contact Paper

+ I need a vacation and it looks like Delineate Your Dwelling read my mind

+ Almost Makes Perfect has a rad new site design that you can purchase too in her shop

+ You can make potato chips in the microwave!!!

+ This makes me want to learn embroidery

+ Apparently it’s National Letter Writing Month? Damask Love has us covered

+ Sewing goals

And finally, this Greek word which totally defines why I need to make things.

Your turn—what have you been enjoying this week?

Just Pay Me in Craft Supplies – The Notebook Edition with danger!awesome

04.07.16

Don’t get me wrong, I love gadgets and apps but not matter how many I try…you’ll never find me without a basic, in-real-life, hold-in-your-hands notebook.

The feel and sound of the pages, the satisfaction of a smooth ink pen running across the lines, endlessly trying (and failing) to improve my awful handwriting—sorry, apps, you just can’t compete with that.

Which is why when danger!awesome contacted me to design a product for me to share with Idle Hands Awake readers, we realized pretty quickly that a custom notebook was just what the doctor, err, nostalgic organizer in me ordered.

While I love learning new skills and stretching my comfort zone, there’s one area in which I just have no talent—drawing. My “drawings” look like the scribbles of a highly distracted 4-year-old. So I was thrilled to meet danger!awesome, a local Boston-area design firm that makes custom, affordable products for its clients. Clients like me, who can’t draw (and also don’t own fancy machinery).

danger!awesome prides itself on “bringing making to the masses.” Which as you know I am ALL about! With a staff of designers, illustrators, videographers and more—and a fleet of 3D printers and laser cutters—the team of danger!awesome works with regular non-designery folks like you and me to turn our ideas into actual products.

Hence, the “just pay me in craft supplies” notebook:

In order to make its design services affordable, danger!awesome functions on a pledge model. Once a certain number of people have pledged to buy the final piece, it goes into production and gets shipped off to you and your friends. (I can see this being really epic for a club, team, or a group of friends who wants to bring an inside joke to life).

And if all this weren’t fun enough, danger!awesome also shares the profits with their clients, either by giving 10% of the proceeds to the client, or 25% to the charity of the client’s choice.

A local company that lets you make custom creations AND gives back to the community? Yes yes yes please.

And here’s where I get to share the love with you, dear readers. (This is also the sales-pitchy portion of this post, but it’s for a good cause!)

If you liked my “Just Pay Me in Craft Supplies” DIY tote bag but don’t want to fuss with iron-ons, or you need a fancy new notebook for all your plans/ideas/doodles, OR you just want to support both an independent maker firm and a charity at once, you can buy this beautiful notebook—designed by me!—for $15.

25% of the proceeds will be going to the Animal Rescue League of Boston (where we adopted our beloved cat Wally, they are a really awesome shelter!).

The notebook will be available for sale next week, Tuesday 4/12. I would love love love if you would support danger!awesome by pitching in—we just need 15 people to buy a copy for it to be produced, so please share!

So what do you think of danger!awesome’s design model? Do you have any ideas cooking for products you’d love to make? Don’t forget to check out their maker gallery at the bottom of the homepage for inspiration!

A HUGE thank you to danger!awesome for reaching out to me, and to Atma for interpreting my jumbled ideas to make such a beautiful design! danger!awesome did provide me with a free prototype of the notebook in exchange for this post, but I pinky-promise that all opinions are my own. I truly think this is a great organization, and I only work with brands that I love and think you will too!

#idlehandscreate

04.01.16

Hey friends, I’m so pleased to publish the first ever #idlehandscreate! This is my chance to use my little old blog to show what all of YOU are making! Which means get ready for way more exclamation points because I am so wowed by your creations!

#idlehandscreate

I know this looks deceptively like a bouquet of succulents, but these are actually edible gum paste cake decorations made by my irl friend Sarah. Find her @cakeztagram for more too-pretty-to-eat treats (like this ranunculus!).

There’s nothing more flattering as a DIY blogger than seeing you guys try my tutorials, and I just love the way @gilelizabethh’s little pineapple ring dishes turned out!

@isoscella proves that everything looks better with paint in her feed brimming with DIYs. I love this votive project on her blog, that she shares my love of copper, and omg this girl can paint!

Because whimsical doodles and quirky figure poses aren’t adorable enough, @rebelchallenger TAKES CARE OF WILD BIRDS. Like a real-life Snow White or something. !!!

@iamvantan makes gorgeous necklaces AND can paint her nails, two things I really wish I could do. Also, this puddle picture.
