10 Basic Crafting Skills for Beginner Makers

10.20.15

If you’re a reader of DIY and craft blogs, there’s a good chance you’ve made some things.

But there’s also a good chance you haven’t. Like my friend Caitlyn, who follows my blog, but who (wrongly) thinks she’s not creative and has told me repeatedly, “I could never do that!”

Here’s the thing for you doubters of your own abilities—I never made a damned thing until I suddenly got the DIY itch a couple years ago. (We won’t count the obligatory, painful high school attempts at “art”).

So if you’ve never crafted and want to learn how, you got this.

And if you really really don’t know where to start, these 10 Basic Crafting Skills are where.

Make It Friday: Pumpkin Edition

10.16.15

It’s important in life that we all know our strengths.

Halloween projects are decidedly not my strength.

Thankfully, the same cannot be said for the makers of these pumpkins.

Make it Friday: Pumpkin Edition

+ Lovely Indeed paint pen pumpkins

+ Sassy Sparrow fern pumpkin

+ Homey oh my! mudcloth pumpkins

+ Fall for DIY hanging macrame pumpkin

+ The Merrythought fresh floral moon pumpkin

+ Paper & Stitch balloon-dipped pumpkins

And as a bonus: a pineapple jack-o-lantern. Because why the hell not?

Just Pay Me in Craft Supplies – DIY Iron-on Tote

10.13.15

I’d like to get paid in craft supplies.

Well, and some money. But I spend most of that on craft supplies anyways so if we can just skip straight to the good stuff, that’d be great.

DIY Iron-on Tote Bag with printable by Idle Hands Awake

Believe it or not, I somehow survived the ’90s without sporting a homemade neon sweatshirt with ironed-on cartoon ghosts.

I know, it’s like I wasn’t a real crafter until now. I feel like I need to get some sort of initiation pin. Adding that to my project to-do list.

The point is, if this is your first iron-on transfer too, it’s stupidly easy. And actually kinda fun. And I now want to make iron-on everything.

Welcome to Idle Hands Awake

10.12.15

And only a week late!

I’m so so pumped to officially introduce you to the new blog: Idle Hands Awake. This new brand has been a long time coming and it feels effing good to finally get it out into the real (internet) world.

There’s not toooo much to say about the design itself, except…what’s that! A real logo! Thank you so much to the talented Bre of Brepurposed for the beautiful text design and your endless help!

There will be lots of new features and content as I quest to go pro, but for now let me point you to my updated about page for the scoop on what you can expect here on the new bloggy.

And finally, because I am über proud of having done the majority of the design myself, the moodboard I made to put everything all together:

Idle Hands Awake design moodboard Thank you for sticking around even during my prolonged absence, friends. I may not have been producing in the last months, but I was watching, and I was so honored to see that you were still stopping by my little blog. I hope you’ll love Idle Hands Awake as much as I do!

There’s No Good Way to Say This…

10.02.15

There’s no good way to say goodbye.

Unless, of course, goodbye is not really goodbye.

bouquet_8202

It’s been a looooong time since my last post. Those of you who’ve been around the blog a while know that I struggle with several health issues, and I honestly got derailed by them this year. It happens.

But in my prolonged unintentional absence, I found some time to evaluate where I want to take this blog.

Jade and Fern was born out of an accident, you see, when I started blogging about my creative efforts as a way to hold myself accountable. Through Jade and Fern—and YOU, dear readers—I discovered that I REALLY REALLY REALLY love blogging. Like a lot. And I knew that I wanted big things for this little corner of the blog world.

So Jade and Fern is retiring. Or rather, rebranding.

My Facebook fans have already gotten a little peek at the new blog, but the rest of you will have to wait till I get all the technical aspects of a DIY domain change finalized. Soon. Hopefully.

There will be more DIY, more intention, and a whole lot of new goodies. There will be a real logo for once. And there will be cake. (Well for me; I will need at least two to recover from the number of calls I’ve had to place to my webhost this week).

Thank you, friends, for all of your support, page views, shares, pins, and comments. You are what’s fun about blogging, and you are the reason I’m freshening this little online space. I hope you stick around.

xoxo
