DIY Tina Belcher Costume

10.14.14

Planning elaborate costumes is my favorite Halloween tradition—other than my annual viewing of Hocus Pocus, of course. Over the years I’ve dreamt up epic (to me) costumes for The Hulk, Rosie the Riveter, a walking carrot (yeah I don’t know why either), Larry King…you get the idea.

The problem is, I never actually make these costumes. Because costumes can get kind of expensive, you know? And as a home-decor/DIY addict, I’d much rather spend my money on a new power tool or piece of furniture, than on a pair of suspenders and fake abs I’m never going to wear again.

But this year…this year, I’M IN LOVE WITH TINA BELCHER. And I must be her. Which is why I’m making a DIY Tina Belcher costume.

If you are into quirky comedy then you surely already know of Bob’s Burgers, which critics hail as THE BEST ANIMATED COMEDY OF ALL TIME. I just made that up, but it’s a great show, trust me. And awkward, horse-obsessed, boy-crazy, 13-year old Tina is definitely the cherry on top.

In order to justify actually buying this costume rather than just daydreaming about it, I decided everything would have to come from one store and cost under $50.

So here we go, everything you need for a one-stop DIY Tina Belcher costume:

glasses* || wig* || hair clip*

T-shirt in light blue* || skirt in royal blue* || socks* || shoes*

Total cost for all pieces with FREE shipping through Amazon: $43.96.

+++ UPDATE: Some of the items I linked to in 2014 are no longer available so I’ve searched out replacements for you and updated the links! Go be Tinas!

Not too bad, right? Admittedly more than I’d prefer to spend, but Tina is so so worth it.

There’s only one thing missing – a DIY Jimmy Jr. costume!

I could no sooner pick a favorite Tina moment than animate myself into her reality, so I’ll leave you with this one that my fiancee recommended.

Are you a Halloween costume person? And if so, what are your dress-up plans for this year?

+++UPDATE: I did it! And Alan joined me! Check out our costumes!

Jade and Fern

I’m off to everybody’s favorite Swedish import today…but before I go, I realized I was so busy being anxious last week that I never took time to say “thank you.”

THANK YOU, you dear kind readers you, for all your wonderful comments, likes, and pins, regarding both my engagement and my living room reveal! You are so sweet and supportive and make blogging a real treat. I am truly lucky to have you guys fueling this little creative venture, and I can’t fully express through this medium how much it means to me. I heart you!!!

Now for some fun stuff that caught my eye this week:

+ This cat costume cracks me up.

+ I need to plaster this rope light message all over my house.

+ The colors and shape of Hello Lidy’s latest yarn art are sooooo good.

+ I want to go to there.

+ A. and I have decided not to do wedding rings because they’re just not representative of us; but if we DID do them, you can bet I’d make this sweet little salt cellar ring box for The Big Day.

What’s inspired you this week? Have a happy weekend, lovelies!

AND Breathe…

10.03.14

It’s a real slippery slope from I can do all the things! to I’ve made a huge mistake.

Do you ever feel like your workload is so full that you don’t know where to start and end up a little…frozen in fear?

Yeah, I’ve been there for a couple days now.

So for today, I leave you (and me!) with this simple reminder:

I’m going for a walk to clear my head before settling down to work with a nice hot cup of chamomile tea. Hopefully that will loosen the knot of anxiety in my chest.

And hopefully you are in a calmer place than me today! What helps you relax when you do feel overwhelmed?

Peace out, friends.

He Put a Ring on It

Well, not literally, we’re not doing rings. And I was actually the one who proposed.

But the point is…WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!

YAY!

I’m so glad I can finally share this exciting news with you, bloggy friends! This was obviously the secret I mentioned last week, and what kept me away from the blog the week before. It was sooooo hard for me to keep it off the blog until we’d told all our people, but we’ve finally made the rounds and now this news is OUT! BOOM!

A. and I are so happy about it. We had talked about getting married before, but always in terms of “eventually,” “when we’re more financially established,” “someday,”…

But a week and a half ago, while playing a game of Diablo III and engrossed in a random conversation about what we do and don’t like about wedding ceremony traditions, it was suddenly right. So I asked. And he said yes!!!

I know, that is the least romantic proposal story ever. But it’s very us, so whatevs. Memories.

Here’s the really fun bit: we don’t want to wait until we can have a big fancy wedding. Getting married is about US, and now that we’ve said “yes,” we want to make it official because we’re crazy lovebirds. So we’re going to the courthouse IN NOVEMBER with just a few friends and family members and tying the knot quick and dirty. !!!!!

Which is not to say there won’t be fanfare. I’m still getting a dress and some flowers and fancy shoes. Annnd we will be doing a “real” ceremony and reception/party at some point next year. That means I get to plan TWO weddings. Something I’m totally excited about right now but will probably regret later on…

So what does this mean for Jade and Fern? Obviously, there will be some amount of wedding DIY-ing and blogging going on. But I promise to try not to let it take over, this is not a wedding blog!

Please remind me of that promise later when the “real” ceremony is happening and I’m losing my mind.

If you do want to see lots of wedding stuff, follow my now crazy active wedding board on Pinterest!

I’m not sure how to wrap this up because I’m so giddy that coherent sentences aren’t really happening, so instead I’ll just show you this outtake from the mini-shoot I did for this post: Jax the Cat

Happy Tuesday! And DON’T FORGET: today is the last day to enter to win a Loom & Mill pillow! You have until Midnight EST. Go go go!
