Make it Friday: Procrastination Nation

08.08.14

I’m procrastinating.

Not that this is really rare or anything, but today I’m procrastinating finishing up my living room projects so I can finally reveal the new look here on the bloggy.

Maybe, maybe, I got overly ambitious and am trying to do too many things.

Or maybe, maybe, I will get it all done.

You’re gonna get something regardless, it’s just the degree of awesome which will vary.

Until then, I’m admiring these projects by lovely makers who already got their shit done:

This paper petals wall hanging by Oh Happy Day is just spectacular.

The cutest (and easiest!) way to spruce up party lanterns: cover them with hearts, of course. By A Bubbly Life for PB Teen.

Obviously I gotta love anything that’s a hexagon or a coaster. These marbled clay coasters by Something Peach are just dreamy. (Time-out for shameless self-promotion: see my own hexagon coasters here!)

This pom-pom pillow from Living with Punks has been making the rounds on Pinterest this week and I am smitten. Look at those giant poms!

Touted as a Valentine, I think a floral ampersand collage would make a great gift for myself any time of year. By Design Sponge contributor Ashley Campbell.

Not exaggerating at all—The Crafted Life’s wooden “hello” sign is my favorite DIY project. Ever. Seriously, Rachel, you killed it times a thousand.

What inspirational projects have you seen this week? Any good weekend plans for making or just living?

P.S. Thank you so much to everyone for all the thoughtful, supportive comments on yesterday’s chronic pain post! It wasn’t easy to write, but I knew ahead of time that you guys would be awesome about it, because you guys ARE awesome.

On Pain, Limitations, and the Struggle to Accept

08.07.14

On Pain, Limitations, and the Struggle to Accept || Jade and Fern It’s been 7 days since my last migraine, and I’m starting to make plans again.

I can go back to work! I can do 10x more projects and blog posts! I’m unstoppable!

I’ve been here before. In fact, this pattern plays out every time I get a break from migraines for more than a few days. What can I say, I’m an optimistic person.

The problem is, I have chronic migraines and fibromyalgia. I live well in spite of this, but they aren’t going away anytime soon, if ever. And accepting that fact is even harder than dealing with the pain.

………………………………….

I want to share this story with you, this side of my life. Because it feels like I’ve been deceiving you a little bit. I mean, I LOVE making things and blogging about them and joking around and being ridiculous. I have a lot of fun in my life and try to live every “well day” to the fullest.

But pain is an enormous part of my existence that affects me daily. To keep that off of this blog is to deny my story. Blogland can sometimes be all sunshine and rainbows, and that’s awesome, we don’t want to be confronted with hard truths every day. But we all have adversity and struggles in our lives, and I’m sure many of you have pain or know someone who does. Today, I’m honoring that.

………………………………….

Life with chronic pain is a constant whirlwind of emotions. There are days when I sob and shake my fists at the universe, and days when I am so filled with hope and elation that it feels my heart will burst.

My therapist tells me to have understanding and compassion for my body, but truthfully, I can’t help but think of it as a saboteur, sneaking up on my enthusiasm and ambition and knocking me into bed, sometimes for days at a time. (As a result of 12-15 migraines a month, I have seen almost everything on Netflix, including ALL available episodes of Law & Order and its many spinoffs).

When you have a chronic pain condition, your nerves become inflamed and overactive, so you end up being more sensitive to more stimuli and have more pain (that was a terrible explanation of a medical truth, but hopefully you get the point).

In the last few years, the most unpredictable things have started to affect me. Sunlight glinting off the ocean at the beach—migraine. Moved too briskly on one of my daily walks—fibromyalgia flare-up. Laughed so much my jaw started hurting—migraine.

It’s like the friggin’ chaos theory, a butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil and I end up bedridden! On Pain, Limitations, and the Struggle to Accept || Jade and Fern

My (bunny) heat pack and eye mask—little comforts to get through.

The worst is how unreliable all this makes me. Deadlines are almost impossible for me to stick to—I’ve even had to stop working because I just couldn’t keep a job anymore with my abysmal attendance. My good friends know what’s up by now, and I try to schedule “backup days” for events that I plan or host in case I end up sick. I know it can’t be helped. But I hate that I’m not somebody my friends can count on, not really.

Now you know why it took me sooooooo looooooong to finish painting!

I’m not writing this to complain, or for pity. I know many, if not most, of us don’t get to live the lives we dream of. But that SUCKS, you know?

I am vivacious and passionate and adventurous and have dreams the size of blue whales, but my health forces me to live a small life.

Ok, so maybe this is partially about complaining. Sometimes you just have to get all that garbage out.

Time for the good news! It sounds like an awful lot when you put it all together and dedicate a whole blog post to it. But I DO live well on the whole, really. I’m happy. I’m still vivacious and passionate and adventurous and have dreams the size of blue whales. I want to do more and bigger and better, but I’m proud of what I’ve managed to do. I am not defeated.

Yes, of course, I’d love to improve, and whenever it’s 11:11 I squeeze my eyes shut and wish to be well. But I’m incredibly lucky too. I am able to do what makes me happy. This creative outlet has been life-changing, it’s helped me feel like I have a life again. (You can read more about how I rediscovered my creativity after a long dormancy on my Pinterest post).

12-15 migraines per month is a lot for the average person, but it’s actually a huge improvement from where I was three years ago, and I relish in having so much of my life back. They are less severe now, too—Botox is a miracle drug, people.

I find ways to outsmart some of the limitations I face, most recently acquiring a cheap lap tray so that I can work on small projects in bed on days when I only have a “minigraine.”

Sometimes, I’m even able to feel understanding and compassion for my body and its tricksy ways.

Life isn’t perfect, but it’s good, you know?

And anyways, what would Champ do without me being in bed so frequently? 🙂 Living with chronic pain - Champ the Cat cuddles during a migraine || Jade and Fern

Migraine days are Champ’s favorite days.

Wow, if you made it this far, you are a real trooper. Thank you for allowing me to share this with you. I know it was a long post and not the easiest, but it was time.

Now I’d love to hear from you! I certainly hope all of you have easy perfect lives, but assuming that is not the case, what struggles do you need/want to share? What comforts you when times are hard? How have you worked through adversity? Let’s inspire and encourage each other, and honor each other’s challenges!

Crushing On: Make and Tell

08.05.14

Happy Tuesday, erry’body!

It’s high time for another blogcrush, as this one has had me positively swooning all summer and I’m just dying to share.

Crushing on Make and Tell blog - Feature and Interview on Jade and Fern

Make and Tell is the new DIY genius on the block, and if you haven’t seen this beautiful blog before, I just know you will love it.

Stephanie is the super stylish crafter behind the magic. Her blog is brimming with unique and simple projects, printables, her favorite supplies, and (my favorite!) tricks for basic crafting skills.

The truly remarkable thing about Make and Tell is that Stephanie only started blogging in April! Of this year! Her blog is so professional, sophisticated, and bountiful—and how about that gorgeous photography?! I never would have guessed it was such a newbie. Seriously, I’m seething with jealousy totally impressed.

And now for an exclusive, breaking interview with Stephanie herself:

What inspired you to start DIY-ing? Do you remember the first thing you made?

You know, I’ve been making things for so long, I have absolutely no idea! Crafting has always been a love of mine from way back when, long before blogs existed. You know all those teenage girls who are super cool and into fashion and party hard? Yeah, I wasn’t one of those. While they were out partying, I was watching Better Homes and Gardens, knitting and glass painting. I like to think I was a hipster before my time, but really I’ve just always been a bit of a nanna!

What’s your favorite tool or material?

In a past life, I was an avid paper-crafter and although I’m so excited by all the new toys I get to play with for Make and Tell, my staples are still paper-related. I’m most at home with my x-acto knife, paper punches and bone folder. Oh, and I love my A4-sized labels. There are so many ways you can use labels – they’re incredibly versatile!

What’s your best tip for getting out of a creative rut?

Getting away from my gadgets! I’m lucky to live in an area with loads of trees, near a beach and next to plenty of cafes. Going for a walk helps to clear my head and I’m bound to see something that inspires me. Often it’s something I wouldn’t usually think to look for either, like the pattern on someone’s scarf, the colours of the waves on the sand or the shape of a certain flower. You just never know when inspiration will strike!

Chocolate or vanilla?

Ooh, that’s a toughie. As much as I love chocolate, I’d have to say vanilla. Or am I allowed to say vanilla with chocolate sprinkles? 🙂

………………………………………

Thanks so much, Stephanie, for humoring my blogcrush—I’m so glad we connected! Keep the awesomeness coming, girl!

Friends, be sure to check out Stephanie’s fabulous blog and show her some love (as if you could resist…).

What new to you blogs have you been reading lately? Please share!

Cacti-ify All the Things

08.01.14

You guys. It’s August. AUGUST. I saw a tree with yellowing leaves yesterday.

Where has this summer gone??? Oh, right, I spent the whole time painting.

Fall is my favorite, but I’m not ready yet. Instead I’m distracting myself from the impending season change with the most summery thing I can think of: DIY cactus projects.

Cacti to DIY || via Jade and Fern

My last piñata encounter ended with my friend Sarah and me knocking it off the string and beating the thing to death on the ground with broom handles. Time for a redo! Mini cactus piñatas it is. By Oh Happy Day.

How cute is this cactus pillow by Everything Emily?? I want to cover our couch with them.

Another pillow—is my subconscious telling me to go back to bed? (Yes.) Loving the simple graphic pattern of this easy stamped cactus pillow by—appropriately—Patchwork Cactus.

Lucy of Craftberry Bush calls her painted rock cacti garden a “children’s craft,” but I am not even remotely embarrassed to admit that I LOVE cutesy kids’ decor. And anyways it looks totally sophisticated, don’t you think?

And for those of you who have a green thumb, a real live cactus garden by the always delightful A Beautiful Mess.

What’s been inspiring you this week?

How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds

07.31.14

April 30, 2014. 1pm in German time. The place: Dublin airport. The food: mediocre. The wait: LONG.

Nothing brings you back to reality quite like ending a vacation filling out customs forms and removing your belt and shoes for the 4th time in one day. Dublin-to-USA airport security is tight.

And nothing sends a chill down your spine quite like having an ARMED SOLDIER escort you from the waiting room to a “holding pen” filled with other ARMED SOLDIERS.

I knew those antlers would be trouble the moment I started haggling for them at a Dresden flea market a month before. But was it worth it?

Hell yes.

How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds || Jade and Fern

I am now the proud hipster owner of my very own antler shed. Or I guess I should say ambivalent hipster owner, since hipsters aren’t supposed to care?

How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds || Jade and Fern

On a side note, I think blue hydrangea + copper + bone white is my new favorite thing ever.

Want to use this look in your own decor? Please say yes, and then keep reading.

How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds

Skill Level: Easy Peasy

Time: 1 hour active, 2-3 hours drying time

What You Need:

  • an antler shed! Try looking on Etsy and at flea markets (the one in Dresden had TONS if you’re ever in Germany). Or if you’re really dedicated, you can search for one in the wild (this is probably the only time a vegan will ever direct you to a hunting website).
  • old toothbrush, soft scrubby sponge, bristle brush (the kind for heavier bathtub cleaning)
  • 1/4 C. baking soda, mixed with just enough water until it forms a paste
  • 1 C. warm water mixed with 1 C. hydrogen peroxide
  • elbow grease
  • old towel
  • 12-gauge wire* for decorating and hanging
  • wire cutters* or strong scissors

Note: these cleaning instructions do NOT apply to very fresh sheds that still have velvet or blood on them! That’s a more intense process that I leave to other DIYers to explain, sorry folks!

*Affiliate links. This means if you purchase, I will earn a small commission at no extra charge to you, which is pretty sweet because it helps me pay blogging bills, so thank you! I will only link to products I have used or would use myself, pinky promise!

What You Do:

Step One – Using a combination of sponge, brush, and toothbrush, thoroughly scrub the shed down with the baking soda paste. Really get into all the nooks and crannies, paying special attention to the base—mine had a couple bits of fur attached (ew).

How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds || Jade and Fern

A. hand-modeled for me! Didn’t he do a good job?

Step Two – Repeat the entire cleaning with the water/peroxide mixture. The peroxide helps to lighten up the darker stains a bit.

How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds || Jade and Fern

Step Three – Rinse off all that gunky water. A hose is helpful if you have access to one, plus then you can make rainbows.

How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds || Jade and Fern

Step Four – Towel off the antler and stick it in a sunny spot to dry for a few hours. (Not pictured because boring).

Step Five – Decorate! Grab that wire and start wrapping it around the antler wherever you want. A thick 12-gauge really works best as it’s less springy and will stay wrapped up better. Make sure the clipped ends all face the “back” side of the antler.

Step Six – If you’ll be hanging your antler shed, you can make a hanger using the same wire. Cut a long piece, 8 or so inches longer than the drop length. Wrap both ends tightly around the antler, leaving a 3″ tail on each end. How to Clean and Display Antler Sheds || Jade and Fern

My hand model went to go take a nap. Poop.

Then coil the tails around the “hanger” part of the wire, like so:

And that’s it! Now you’re a hipster too.

I’m in love with the way the aluminum and copper wire contrast against the bone white of the antler. Sadly I don’t know what species of deer this guy is from! The Customs Inspector’s best guess was something Eastern European. Any readers have a guess?

And in case my Customs drama scared you away from importing your own antlers on your next international trip, as of this writing, bones and antlers can be brought into the U.S., as long as they are clean and dry, and are NOT from an endangered species.

Which was really good news for me, because I didn’t bother to find out until after I had schlepped that gargantuan 26″ antler across Germany in my luggage for 3 weeks. Still worth it.

What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever brought back from a trip?

Pssst…did anybody notice that pretty white wall? It’s true, I’m finally. done. painting. Reveal coming soon!
