Make it Friday: Lucky 13th

06.13.14

Happy Friday the 13th!

This week has flown by. I think I say that every week, but this time it was for real.

I’ve been pinning less due to spending all my time on painting prep and lemonade, but here are some beautiful projects that stuck out amidst the busy blur:

Coaster projects have been catching my eye ever since I made my hexagon coasters. These donut coasters by Henry Happened are too adorable!

Have you seen the new trend of embroidering vintage imagery? (Well it’s new to me, but I live under a rock so I’m not the best trend authority). I just adore this embroidered deer print by Lulu the Baker. Also, that color-blocked frame has my name on it.

My cats would rip this striped pom-pom pillow to shreds, but I can dream, can’t I? By The Makerista.

I need 6 dozen motivational sugar cookies to get me through living room painting mayhem. Maybe The Alison Show takes orders…

Is copper over? Never. Desperately wanting this chic copper toilet paper holder by Kristi Murphy.

Monograms aren’t usually my thing, but Homey Oh My’s floral monogram won me over.

And on a completely different inspirational note, I came across a fascinating photo essay about modern gatherer-hunter nomads in the U.S. Could give up your possessions and live a life of foraging? I never could, but my hippie-heart is sorely tempted.

How are you keeping busy this weekend?

Blackberry Lemonade Spritzer, Or, My Personal Refresh Button

06.11.14

Somewhere, far away, there is a magical land void of nearly all humidity, with a constant daytime temperature between 65º and 74º.

This land might be called Southern California, but regardless of its name or location, one thing is clear: I do not live there. And until I do, I will spend summers melted to the couch, cat hairs glued to every sweaty pore, and whining like a baby pterodactyl.

Blackberry lemonade spritzer was invented for sticky grumpy times like these.

(Actually, the weather has been tolerable this week, but I planned this post a few weeks ago and am a lazy-ass blogger, so I’m rolling with it. At least now we’ll be prepared for when the humidity inevitably strikes again).

This drink is sooooo delicious and sooooo refreshing. I mean, obviously lemonade is an instant summer pick-me-up. Add in homemade blackberry syrup and fizzy sparkling water, and we’ve almost got ourselves a mocktail, folks. I’ll take 50.

Serves 6

Time: 20 min. prep, 2.5 hours to chill

What You Need:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup regular water
  • 1.5 cups blackberries
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice (from approx. 8 lemons, depending on juiciness)
  • 4 cups sparkling water or club soda
  • lemon slices and blackberries to garnish

Step One – Combine the regular water, sugar, and blackberries in a small saucepan, and heat on medium until just boiling. Whisk thoroughly until the sugar has dissolved, then lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes until the blackberries are soft enough to crush with a spoon. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step Two – While the blackberry mixture is cooling, juice the lemons and pour into a large pitcher.

Step Three – Strain the cooled blackberry mixture into the lemon juice, discarding the boiled blackberries. (It’s ok to leave in some bits, but be warned that those blackberries turn into little sugar bombs during cooking; too many will make the final drink way too sweet!). Add the sparkling water and stir well.

Step Four – Chill for two hours. Then pour over ice, garnish with lemon slices and blackberries, and enjoy!

I’m obviously not a summer person—what about you? What’s your favorite hot-weather treat?

Worry Less, Imagine More

Worry is a Misuse of Your Imagination || Quote by Dan Zadra, print by Roaring Softly Illustration via Etsy

Yesterday I found myself balking at the amount of paint-related projects I’ve taken on.

We have a narrow painting window here in New England—lacking a climate-controlled indoor work area, I have to squeeze all such projects into the brief and unstable season known as “spring.” Not easy when the temperature can fluctuate 40º in one day!

But Pinterest came to the rescue with these inspiring words: worry is a misuse of imagination. So at least for today I’m going to breathe, put the frivolous worry aside, and imagine how great it will all look when it’s done.

What’s inspired you this week? Have a happy Friday!

I’m Dreaming of a White Living Room

05.27.14

Lavender living room, your days are numbered. Paint has been purchased, helper-friends have been scheduled, ladders have been borrowed. You will be white.

Fingernails on a chalkboard—that’s how the lavender trim affects me every time I walk into that room. Is that an overreaction? Almost certainly. But what can I say, I’m a girl who (sometimes) knows what she wants, and it definitely ain’t lavender.

There’s still two and a half weeks to go before The Painting of The Room begins. So while I patch and sand and caulk and move furniture and drive Alan and the cats completely bonkers, here is some white living room inspiration to fawn over.

Somebody should really invent a technology that allows me to reach through the computer screen and steal all those rugs and plants and artworks.

Which of these spaces is your favorite? How do you feel about white walls versus colorful walls (or trim)? Also, does anybody else out there want to come help me paint? I will bake you cookies, which I will hand to you through the screen.
