How Pinterest Changed My Life

How Pinterest Changed My Life || Jade and Fern

How Pinterest changed my life.

Is that the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard or what? (Please don’t answer that).

The thing is, it’s entirely true.

**Schmalz alert: this post is overly cheezeball. You have been warned.

When I graduated college with my brand new photography degree, I had every intention of landing an awesome internship, perfecting my craft, and living a fabulously creative life of portraiture and Art with a capital A.

But I suffer from persistent migraines, which had steadily worsened while I was a student and became truly chronic after graduation. By chronic, I mean 15-20 migraines per month. I know, that’s a scary number. Nothing sucks away your creativity or ambition like searing pain and the anxiety that you’re going to lose your job because you get sick so often.

I spent the next three years or so bouncing from crappy job to crappier job, visiting a plethora of doctors, and feeling like my brain and every creative cell were rotting inside my skull. I don’t think I picked up my camera once in that time; I could barely catch my breath.

And then came Pinterest.

The biggest thing the migraines took from me was inspiration—not just feeling it, but even the ability to seek it out. I struggled so much just to get up in the mornings, there was no chance to get to art shows or befriend other creatives.

But with Pinterest, just like that, I suddenly had endless inspiring images at my fingertips. Photography, art, fashion—anything I could want to look at. Pinning is effortless, and easy to do in the little “well” time I had. I felt my world enlarging a bit, and my brain waking up.

It’s no coincidence that my migraines started to improve when creativity resurfaced in my life. (The Botox helped too. Less migraines and a wrinkle-free forehead? Yes, please!)

I pinned for about a year, ravenously sifting through the boundless sea of craft projects, travel destinations, and life hacks, and absorbing that which in some way inspired me.

Then one morning I woke up, and I felt like making. It was as though that year of pinning had been unforeseen research, stuffing my brain with slowly percolating ideas which all of a sudden burst out in a creative impulse to make…a pom-pom bookmark.

How Pinterest Changed My Life || Jade and Fern

Hey, we all have to start somewhere.

Just two months after making this first little craft project, I started Jade and Fern.

So you see, Pinterest really did change my life. It gave me access to inspiration in a time when I lived in a creative vacuum. And it helped me make the leap from “I could make that” to “I did make that.”

Do you use Pinterest? What has your experience been with this often controversial platform? Has Pinterest changed any aspect of your life? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Enough of this cheesiness, I’m off to pin all the things do more research.

02.04.14

As I mentioned last week, I lost my glasses. Which is making it quite difficult to do things like read, drive, and, you know, BLOG.

Frustrating as it is to lose my pretty clear frames and have to shell out an unexpected couple hundred bucks, I get to shop! These are some of the online specs that have caught my eye (harhar):

Specs || via Jade and Fern

Punchline by Rivet and Sway – My absolute favorite pair. Sadly, Rivet and Sway does not offer progressive prescriptions. Sniffle.

Willow by Warby Parker

Ms. G by Rivet and Sway

Fashionably Late by BonLook

Parker by Lookmatic – The pair I ordered! I’m trying to be patient but that hasn’t stopped me from calling Lookmatic every day to see what the status is…

Which pair is your favorite? Have any of you done the online glasses thing before?

I’m not sure how active I’ll be on the blog this week–all joking aside, my eyes really do hurt being on the computer so long. And I had an awesome project in the works, but I can’t photograph it…because I can’t tell when the camera is in focus… What a ridiculous obstacle to productivity.

In the meantime, don’t forget about the 14 Days of Love Giveaway! Today’s hostess is PJ of Bunny and Dolly – hop over to her blog to check out the prize! You can keep up with all of the bloggers on the 14 Days of Love Facebook page, and see a complete list of prizes at Oleander and Palm.

On the New Look, Radio Silence, and a super special collaboration

01.31.14

First things first—yes, Jade and Fern has a new look!

I was long overdue for a blog redesign and I finally got it together and bought one of Blogzilla’s gorgeous themes. The work isn’t done yet, there are some tweaks and a logo to come, but I’m already so pleased with the revamp.

So why the radio silence? My week so far:

  • I lost my only pair of glasses. I don’t know which is worse, that everything (and most of all my computer screen) is slightly fuzzy, or that Alan keeps making lame jokes like “Can you even SEE me?! Do you even know who I AM?!”
  • Alan and I celebrated his 30th birthday and our six-year anniversary over a fancy vegan meal with even fancier vegan ice cream. Yes, our first date was on his birthday, and even back then he knew the way to my heart was through my stomach, the charmer.

  • After seven long years, I’m finally going back to Germany! In April! Much of my blog negligence this week was due to shopping for airfares and planning out my trip. So many relatives to see! So much food to consume!
  • I got a migraine. Most likely because of a combination of giddy excitement and fuzzy vision.
  • AND I’ve been planning my involvement in…

A Super Special Collaboration!

Kitschtastic DIY Candy Heart Dessert Toppers

01.24.14

Kitsch is in the eye of the beholder, but I’m gonna say these DIY candy heart dessert toppers cross over into the realm of kitschtastic.

How cute would these be to add a little kitschy charm to a Valentine’s Day party? (Do people really have those? Pinterest seems to think so…)

I know that I say this all the time, but this DIY is truly, truly so. very. easy. And fast. Which makes it the perfect DIY, because we all need more time to consume delicious Valentine’s Day goodies be with our significant others.

What You Need:

  • candy hearts, obvs.
  • wooden skewers
  • hot glue gun (or a fast-drying glue of your choice)

What You Do:

Apply a dab of glue to the skewer. Place a candy heart on it and let dry for a few minutes.

Repeat! I used three hearts per side. (And if you are as irritated by today’s candy heart messages as I was (where is the “xoxo?” what’s with this “TTYL” crap?), you could always glue them face down!).

Once all the glue has completely dried and cooled, pull off the gluey strands that hot glue is notorious for, and pop your topper into a tasty treat.

It should go without saying, but just in case—these are NOT edible, so be sure to watch them around kids!

Now please excuse me, I have to go devour that vegan coconut tart I bought as a “prop.”
